Think of it this way
It is the supermarket receipt compared with the one from ten years ago, not with last month's. It is the figure people really notice, even though it never appears in the headlines.
What is 10-Year Inflation?
The cumulative increase in prices over the last ten years, measured month by month. It does not reset like the year-to-date figure: it is a rolling window, so each point answers the same question from a different date. It is the magnitude that explains why people's perception does not match the headlines: annual inflation falling to 2% does not undo what built up before.
How to read 10-Year Inflation
It moves very slowly, so it is not read by its monthly slope but by its level. When it rises, the years entering the window weigh more than the ones leaving it. The useful reference is 22%: that is what a decade at 2% a year accumulates, the Fed's stated target. Above that mark, the decade missed the target. Lag: none; here inflation is the consequence, not the cause.
What 10-Year Inflation means for the market
It is the bar an investment has to clear so as not to lose purchasing power. An asset that rose less than this line over ten years lost real money, even if it shows up in green on the screen. It is the argument cited by those who defend gold and bitcoin as a store of value.
Where the money flows
No money moves here: it is the same increase in the cost of the basket, measured with the window stretched to a decade. Example: if it reads 30%, what cost 100 ten years ago costs 130 today, and a salary that has not risen by that much buys less than it did then.
What to watch in 10-Year Inflation
Compare it with the 22% a decade at 2% a year would accumulate. And do not treat it as a signal for anything operational: it moves so slowly that it adds no new information from one month to the next. It is there to give scale to the two year-over-year lines alongside it: they tell the story of the last year; this one, of the last decade.
How much more expensive the basket has become over the last decade. The figure people really feel in their pockets.
