Correlation between UK M2 and Bitcoin, S&P 500, Nasdaq, gold and oil

Think of it this way

It is the same country measuring itself with its neighbor's ruler. It is still the United Kingdom, but counted with the European yardstick, so the three figures can be added without cheating.

What is UK M2?

The Bank of England publishes this series with an explicit label: “M2, UK estimate of the Monetary Union aggregate”. In other words, it is not the domestic definition but British M2 built with the European Central Bank's rules, so that the figure fits with the rest of the bloc. It includes currency and deposits, in pounds and in foreign currency, up to the same maturity cut-off the ECB uses.

How to read UK M2

Monthly line in pounds. Compare it with M4 on the same chart: the difference between the two is what the British definition adds over the European one, mainly longer-term deposits and deposits of non-monetary financial institutions. Lag: up to 90 days.

What UK M2 means for the market

It is the smallest bloc of the three, so on its own it moves little. Its value is that it lets the Western aggregate be completed without mixing definitions.

Where the money flows

The money in the hands of British households and businesses, counted with the European Central Bank's rules so that the figure can be added to those of the other two blocs. It is created the same way as everywhere else: when a British bank grants a mortgage, new money appears in the homebuyer's account.

What to watch in UK M2

Compare it with British M4 on the same chart: the difference is the deposits of large companies and funds, which the European definition leaves out. Otherwise, it is the smallest bloc of the three and moves nothing on its own; its value lies in letting the global aggregate add up three comparable figures.

Calculated with the harmonized European definition, not a domestic one. That is why it is comparable.
