Think of it this way
It is the official scale. You can weigh yourself on the one at home every day, but the one that counts for the diagnosis is the doctor's.
What is Core PCE Price Level?
The personal consumption expenditures price index, excluding food and energy. It differs from the CPI in a way that matters: it lets the basket change when people substitute products. If the price of a brand-name drug rises and people switch to the generic, PCE captures it and CPI does not. That is why PCE usually comes out somewhat lower, and why the Fed prefers it.
How to read Core PCE Price Level
It is published a month later than the CPI, so it lags behind. Look at it together with core CPI: when both point in the same direction, the signal is solid; when they diverge, it is usually because of the basket substitution effect. Lag: none; here inflation is the consequence, not the cause.
What Core PCE Price Level means for the market
Indirect but decisive: it is the yardstick against which the 2% target is measured.
Where the money flows
Like the other indices, it is not a flow but a price. Its relevant path is institutional: whether the Fed's committee decides to raise or cut rates depends on this number, and what a bank charges a company for a loan depends on that decision.
What to watch in Core PCE Price Level
It is the raw material for the figure the Fed compares with its 2%. An index on its own says nothing, but it serves a reading that the change hides: set the range from 2020 and you will see how much prices have risen in total, which is what people notice and what no downward inflation print undoes.
