Correlation between Fed Repo and Bitcoin, S&P 500, Nasdaq, gold and oil

Think of it this way

It is the central bank's emergency window, and it works like the loan you ask a relative for on the 28th of the month. Nobody turns to it if they still have money. That someone uses it is already the news.

What is Fed Repo Awarded (daily total)?

Total awarded each day in operations in which the Fed LENDS cash against Treasury bonds. Since July 2021 the usual channel has been the Standing Repo Facility, a permanent window; before that date they were one-off operations the Fed opened when needed. It includes both overnight operations and longer-term ones, which can be seen separately in the “Term Repo” series.

How to read Fed Repo Awarded (daily total)

Normally stuck at zero, and that is healthy. What matters is not the level but whether it lights up: any figure other than zero for several days in a row is a strong signal. Note one thing: this is what was AUCTIONED that day, not what remains outstanding. A 14-day operation shows up here once and keeps injecting for two weeks. To see the real effect there is the “Outstanding Repo” series. Lag: none, or +15 days at most: the cash is already in the accounts.

What Fed Repo Awarded (daily total) means for the market

It is the cleanest signal that bank reserves are genuinely scarce. When an institution comes here, it is saying it cannot find funding in the market at a reasonable price. The stress episodes (September 2019, March 2020) have accompanied sharp falls in risk assets, and they have also forced the Fed to inject, which often marks bottoms.

Where the money flows

From the Fed to banks and dealers. A real example: a dealer is left with a mountain of bonds just bought at a Treasury auction and cannot find anyone to finance them that night. It turns to the Fed, leaves the bonds as collateral and walks away with newly created cash, which shows up as new reserves at its bank. The next morning it returns the cash and gets the bonds back.

What to watch in Fed Repo Awarded (daily total)

Any value above zero for more than two days in a row deserves immediate attention. Look at it alongside the Cash Scarcity SOFR - IORB chart: if both light up at the same time, the scarcity is real and not a technical accident.

If this lights up, some institutions urgently need cash.
